Moonrise on Lake Mascoma

This night started off with some smelting in the Mascoma River. After a relatively unsuccessful venture, my friend Tim and I ended up fishing at the Shaker Bridge that spans the lake. Zero fish and an encounter with an opossum (picture to come soon) later I ended up abandoning fishing in favor of taking pictures.

Shaker Bridge

The Shaker Bridge will soon be replaced. If I'm not mistaken, the bridge was built in the 1940's after the original wooden bridge was destroyed in a tornado. The current bridge's rusted, mint green frame and heavily corroding concrete structure is evidence of the need for a replacement.

McNamara Dairy

If you've never had chocolate milk from McNamara Dairy in Plainfield, N.H. then you are really missing out on something great. It comes in a glass bottle and is thick, rich, and delicious. The coolest part is that you can go to the farm and buy it directly from them. They use the honor system there and it is cheaper than buying it in the grocery store. I went for a visit last week with my friends Sarah and Ali. Ali was visiting from Georgia and had never been there. I just realized after all that talk about chocolate milk, you will see no milk of any kind in these photos. Errrr, I will post some pictures of said milk soon.

Sarah and Ali, trying to gather up the courage to grab a chicken. It almost happened.

A large group of chickens make a weird, slightly eerie sound together.

Ali apparently thought this kitten resembled Simba from The Lion King.

Ali tricking a poor calf into thinking her fingers contain milk.
Oh the joys of wandering on a farm!

Crossing

I love foggy nights like these and the eerie, calming effect that normally ensues. I say normally because this night was different. Some friends from New Jersey and Georgia were up visiting and we were anything but calm during one of the best weekends of my life.

Amphibians

I went for a hike with my cousin Kyle and his girlfriend Claire the other day to Cole Pond. If you've never been before, you should definitely check it out. Just don't tell your friends please, because in my naive head it's still a rare known gem of a place and thats exactly how I want it. While on the way we ran into these:

Eastern American Toad (Bufo Americanus)

I thought male toads just fertilized the eggs but apparently not.

Red-Spotted Newt (Notophthalmus Viridescens)
